Bobby Broom is going on the road! He and his new organ trio, The Bobby Broom Organi-Sation, will be the opening act for Steely Dan’s “Jamalot Ever After” tour.
Opening on the West Coast at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon on July 2, Bobby will join Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, on a 46 city, 56 show tour that will conclude at the Capitol Theater for three nights in Port Chester, New York, September 19th to the 21st (Sept. 20th is already sold out!).
The Bobby Broom Organi-sation is a trio featuring Broom, either Makaya McCraven or Kobie Watkins (Bobby Broom Trio) on drums, and Ben Paterson on the organ.
This new band project was created by Bobby at the request of Steely Dan especially for the occasion of this tour. It is the continuation of Broom’s passion for the guitar-organ trio concept began by the great Wes Montgomery in 1959 with his landmark album A Dynamic New Sound for Guitar, Organ and Drums. Several years ago Broom and Deep Blue Organ Trio band-mates organist Chris Foreman and drummer Greg Rockingham formed Broom’s first guitar-organ trio, recorded several albums together, two for Delmark Records and two for Origin Records, and toured with Steely Dan for part of their 2013 tour. In part due to the pressures of that tour, Deep Blue Organ Trio disbanded, and, in 2014, the Bobby Broom Organi-Sation is the musical phoenix that rises from those ashes.
Broom will play selections from Modern Man, his seminal 2001 Delmark Records organ-group recording featuring Dr. Lonnie Smith, as well as some of his trio’s versions of 60s and 70s pop music classics.
“I’m looking forward with anticipation to taking these excellent, energetic young musicians around the country with me to play Jazz for so many people who may be hearing it like this for the first time,” Broom said. “What an extraordinary forum it will be for us to do that. My hat’s off to Steely Dan!”
On the tour, Bobby will be meeting his fans at cities throughout the U.S. and Canada, writing occasional blogs and sending back photos and video from the road.
